Exam 2 Probable Questions
I believe osmosis and the probability postulate will be subjects covered on
the exam. My question would be set up by giving a picture of a system with
pure water on one side of a semi-permeable membrane and an aqueous solution
on the other side. The question would be: What would be the state in which
we would observe this system? Explain why.
Predict to succeed
There were very little biology covered, so I am sure anything covered for biology will be on the test. How molecules move across the cell membrane also encompasses biology and chemistry because of the atoms, molecular compound and other “stuff” that pass through for the cell’s necessities.
A sample question I expect:
Explain how the cell utilize protein channels to transport large molecules across the cell membrane. If there are more than one way, explain why the one you chose is more efficient.
Reflection from LASSI
From the LASSI, I learned that I need to improve my strategies for time management and for anxiety. I believe that these two aspects of my study do have a strong relation to each other. Poor time management may lead to high levels of anxiety which could lead to me being unproductive, which further interferes with my time management. In order to improve myself, I believed that I needed to address both learning strategies I struggled with. In order to help with time management, I’m trying harder to look ahead on deadlines and class schedules so I can set a more rigid schedule to adhere to. To help with anxiety, I try to incorporate small chunks of break time into my schedule during which I stretch, walk around, do some breathing exercise, or brew some relaxing tea. Also to help both my anxiety and time management, I try to incorporate some extra time into my schedules which can leave me some time to work on things in case emergencies appear which can interfere with my planned schedule. I plan to test out these modified habits for a few weeks to see how well they work and make further modifications where needed.
Possible Exam 2 question
One topic that we discussed in class that I found to be very nice in grouping together biology with chemistry was our discussion about how glucose is transported from our small intestine into the intestinal cell and then into the blood stream.
So from that discussion, here is my possible Exam 2 question:
How are large molecules such as glucose able to cross through the selective-permeable plasma membrane of animal cells and enter the bloodstream to be transported to the rest of the body? Remember to use specific structural functions as well as chemical properties that apply.
What i learned…
When i took the LASSI test, i learned a few new things about myself and i was reminded of a few things i already knew. The most crucial thing i learned was that i need extreme improvement on my time management skills. My time management is terrible.
Exam Question
Since we spent so much time on emulsions and intermolecular forces (polar vs nonpolar), I believe there will be a question asking what might happen in a solution that contains proteins, fats, and water.
Exam 2 Question
What is the difference between electronegativity and electron affinity?
LASSI
I was really surprised that my LASSI results showed that my motivation and self study scores were low. I thought I was pretty motivated, but it seems that wasn’t the case. But since my self study were so low, it could explain some of my difficulties thinking about what will be tested on exams.
I think this really opened my eyes to how I face challenges before me in class and academics. Given these scores, the first thing I did was run and de-stress. I feel that I really need to understand myself and see what I want from life. A moment of self evaluation.
My study habits have always changed based on the type of class, but these results made me feel more aware of maybe general study strategies that I need understand.
Exam 2 Potential Test Question
After taking exam 1, its very easy to see that the questions on the exams require a lot of critical thinking and are much more abstract than a multiple choice and fill in the blank sort of layout. A lot of what we’ve learned and are going to be tested on for exam 2 actually require this critical thinking to simply grasp concepts. Everything we covered in Chemistry seemed to be tied to Biology and vice versa. One concept that encompasses the synthesis of Biology and Chemistry is intermolecular forces and bonding theories within our cells. One question I can predict being on Exam 2 is one in regards to emulsions. Emulsions are the combination of two substances that usually cannot be combined. A question in regards to emulsions could sound something like:
How do our cells achieve emulsion and what forces are responsible for allowing two immiscible substances to be mixed? Which macromolecule is needed in our cells to make this possible? Draw a picture illustrating an emulsion.
Exam 2
We’ve been talking a lot about how the body can move and break down macromolecules and how this relates to chemistry. A good question to ask would be:
A woman damages her gallbladder after surviving a car accident. A week after treatment she notices her stool is foamy, she is losing weight, and general discomfort after meals. What treatment would you suggest for her illness?
What I learned from Lassi
I learned a few things about myself from taking the Lassi test. I scored the lowest for Anxiety, Motivation, and Time Management and a few others. But these were the three lowest. I have been adjusting the way I study, I make sure I read the material before class, and I try to score better on quiz’s to boost my motivation level. I have also been trying to not over worry about not doing good, but I am working on it.
