American Mensa Scholarship
The Foundation’s college scholarship program bases its awards totally on essays written by the applicants. Consideration is not given to grades, academic program or financial need.
The scholarship application process
opens Sept. 15 and closes Jan. 15.

The U.S. scholarship program is very large in the geographic area it covers (usually about 75 percent of the country), the number of applications (4,000 to 6,000 in recent years), and the amount of money available for awards (an average of $85,000 a year). The Foundation’s U.S. scholarship program is operated by approximately 400 volunteers around the country with support from the Foundation’s office staff.
U.S. applicants need not be Mensa members. However, Mensa members may apply for both these scholarship programs and the additional Mensa Member Award Program.
The Foundation’s international scholarship program is open to foreign Mensans or their dependents attending college in the United States.

SUPERB-Information Technology for Sustainability
SUPERB-Information Technology for Sustainability is funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program.

Goals
The goal of the Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research at Berkeley – Information Technology for Sustainability (SUPERB-ITS) in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) Department is to prepare and motivate a group of diverse, competitive candidates for graduate study. The research focus of the REU site will be computer science in the context of information technology for sustainability.
SUPERB-ITS participants spend nine weeks at UC Berkeley during the summer (June 10 – August 9, 2013) working on exciting ongoing research projects in information technology with EECS faculty mentors and graduate students. Students who participate in this research apprenticeship explore options for graduate study, gain exposure to a large research-oriented department, and are motivated to pursue graduate study.
SUPERB-ITS participants receive a $4,500 stipend, room and board on campus in the International House, and up to $600 for travel expenses
How To Apply
SUPERB-ITS applications must include all of the following:
- Application Deadline: January 31, 2013

- Submit Part I: Online Application
- Submit Part II: Resumé and Statement of Purpose form (online on the EECS website)
- Submit two letters of recommendation
- Submit official current college transcript
- Submit your supporting documents by January 31, 2013

Eligibility
The program is open to U.S Citizens or permanent residents who are rising juniors or seniors and have completed some upper division course work in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS). A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is required with upward trends in grades being preferable. The program is open to students with or without prior research experience.

University of Southern California’s Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI)
The University of Southern California’s Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI), funded by the NSF, offers an all-expense paid four-week intensive introductory course, Global Environmental Microbiology (GEM).
