The Department of Energy’s Office of Science, Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists Program is now accepting applications for Summer 2013 undergraduate internships.  These research experience guided by laboratory staff scientists are opportunities to contribute to projects important to DOE’s mission. We would like your help in making these opportunities know to your membership community.

The three programs providing internships or fellowships are:

·        the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI),

·        the Community College Internship (CCI) program, and

Applications for both programs are due Tuesday January 10, 2013.

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program, the well-known and longest-running student internship program in SC, encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the DOE Labs. Students participate as research interns at one of 17 15 DOE Labs for 10 weeks during the Summer Term. The internship provides a weekly stipend and support for travel and housing. The Community College Internship (CCI) program encourages community college students to enter technical careers relevant to the DOE mission by providing technical training experiences at the DOE Labs. Students work on technologies or instrumentation projects or major research facilities related to ongoing R&D programs. The internship provides a weekly stipend and support for travel and housing. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce that the National Institutes of Health is recruiting students from the HSF community for their STEP-UP Summer Internship in Biomedical Research.

The STEP-UP Summer Internship Program, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is an opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds and communities to participate in summer research in the areas of diabetes, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, kidney, and hematological diseases.  The STEP-UP program supports students for ten full-time consecutive weeks of basic or clinical research with experienced faculty.  The research experience begins on June 3, 2013 and is completed by August 8, 2013.  The program culminates with an all expense paid trip to the Annual Undergraduate STEP-UP Conference in August 2013 at the NIH in Bethesda, MD. Students will present their summer research to peers, mentors, and experts from the scientific community.

This opportunity is open to undergraduate students, including African-American, Hispanic American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islanders, who have completed at least one year of college by June 2013. Students must be U.S. Citizens, non-citizen nationals, or legal permanent residents.  The program provides students with:

• A Student Participation Allowance of $3,500 issued directly to the student
• Research Training Orientation program in May 2013
• Travel expenses to the Annual Undergraduate Scientific Session and Research Presentations in early August 2013 in Bethesda, MD.
• Students must arrange their own summer housing using the allowance provided. Housing is available at some STEP-UP coordinating institutions and low cost on-campus housing is often available at other universities during the summer. Contact the program coordinators for additional information.
  

The internships may be done in the laboratory or clinic of NIH-funded investigators or most major universities nationwide. STEP-UP coordinators will work with you directly to identify a location where you would like to work and a project in a research area that interests you. Students are matched with a research mentor at the institution or location of their choice whenever possible.

The Short-Term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) is a federally funded program managed and supported by the Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health. The overall goal of NIDDK’s Short Term Education Program (STEP-UP) is to build and sustain a biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social science research pipeline focused on NIDDK mission areas. STEP-UP is particularly interested in increasing the participation of students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research on a national basis, including individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and individuals with disabilities.

To accomplish this goal, the STEP-UP provides research education grants to seven institutions to coordinate three High School STEP-UPs and four Undergraduate STEP-UPs that provides eligible students with ten to twelve weeks of summer research experience and training opportunities. The program culminates with an all expense paid trip to the Annual STEP-UP Scientific Research Symposium in August.

During the Nebraska Summer Research Program <http://www.unl.edu/summerprogram/> , students receive first-hand exposure to research and the experience of graduate school. They work closely with faculty mentors and research teams of graduate students and other summer scholars. Students also have opportunities to participate in meaningful social and professional development activities outside of the laboratory.



Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority review begins Friday, February 1 and all applications are due Friday, February 15. Students historically underrepresented in graduate education and students from academic institutions where research programs are limited are especially encouraged to apply.
