2012-2013 Watson Lecture Series
The Watson Lecture Series, featuring prominent Caltech researchers, is named for the Late Earnest C. Watson, who founded the series in 1922. He presented one of his most popular lectures, “Liquid Air,” as one of the first programs at the new Beckman Auditorium, a gift of Arnold O. and Mabel Beckman, in October 1964.

After months of learning, research, and planning, the Aquaponics students leaders were finally able to begin the building! They spent their weekend putting together their plans to grow their first Aquaponics grow system. With their great teamwork and positive attitudes, the system finally began to take shape and come to life. Up next? It’s Grow Time!
You can see their work outside of SV-23!
Have you ever operated a power tool? For the majority of the Aquaponics student leaders, the answer was no. However, that didn’t stop them. After a quick training on how to safely operate the tools, the students revved up and got to work. Slicing and dicing, the Aquaponics leaders had no problem getting comfortable and enjoying the tools’ speed and power.
Dung beetles can use balls of poo much like air-conditioning units to cool themselves, researchers say.
Dung beetles roll up nutritiousballs of excrement up to 50 times heavier than their own bodies to feed their young. They roll the balls walking backward, with their heads near the ground. The ancient Egyptians envisioned that the sun was rolled around the sky in much the same way, making the dung (or scarab) beetle an important symbol in ancient Egyptian religion.
Past research showed these insects routinely dance in circles on top of their feasts of dung to help navigate away from rival beetles as quickly as possible. As scientists looked for this dancing, they noticed the beetles climbed onto the excrement balls most often during the midday heat.
