Gala Volunteer Positions

Posted by & filed under Events, MESA, Opportunities.

Gala Volunteer Positions are filling up fast!
Well, the gala event is quickly heading towards us and we still have positions available. If you have a specific position you want to sign up for you might want to do it asap! If you don’t care what position you work and you just want to work at the gala then I suggest you sign up as a floater and we’ll move you around where needed.
And have no fear, if the doodle polls (listed below) are still accepting sign ups then there is still space in that area. Once we’ve maxed in a specific area doodle.com will close down the sign-up (poll) and you will not be able to sign up. So — GO, sign up now! Time’s a’ waistin’!
If you’ve never volunteered with the gala rest assured you’re in store for some crazy MAGIC.

We have THREE primary time segments to the gala:
First is SET-UP: it is the early part of the day and is pertinent to the gala going off without a hitch.
Second is the actual GALA, this segment has many working parts.
Third is STRIKE (or tear-down): and is the last part of the day and can always use your help since it is so late.
If you volunteer DURING the gala or have purchased a ticket PLEASE, consider helping out with the set-up or strike shifts. We know it makes for a long day, but think of it as a really long, rewarding day….
The following are all of the available volunteer positions. Please see the descriptions and sign-up links below. The start and finish times are not set in stone, but are pretty close.

And as an FYI:
For those of you who are new to the HRC LA Gala this is our largest fundraising event of the year. A primarily donated and volunteer-run event – the ticket sales go toward our continual fight for equality. It is a formal evening including dinner, cocktails, celebrity honorees and a meaningful, information-filled program and could NOT be held each year without the many, many volunteers who help it run so smoothly. If you’ve worked the event before then you know how magical it is, if you haven’t then you will be in for a very special treat.

Evaluation after LASSI

Evaluation after LASSI

After doing the LASSI, I realized that I am poor in selecting main ideas and information processing. Usually, when I study, I am not confident of predicting the exam questions. Therefore, I tend to make notes for everything. This resulted in having lots of notes and lots of information, making it harder for me to study. The content was way too much! Because my mindset is that there is always too much to study, it always leads to procrastination. Therefore, I will have to work on this by paying attention to which parts or chapters are focused more in class and spend more time on those sections. Maybe I will also have to reorganize my studying techniques, such as writing on flash cards so that I am forced to shorten my notes. The second thing I am rather weak in is information processing. I tend to think slower and not concentrate as much, especially during the 7am classes! I guess I will just have to sleep earlier or get some coffee for that! However, sometimes when I do not understand a problem, I will just tend to memorize that section, which is pretty bad. I’ll have to learn how to clarify and ask questions in class.
Apart from my weakness, I also realized that I am pretty motivated and is able to manage my time properly! So I’ll try using my strengths to overcome my weakness :)

Summer Internship at the National Science Foundation

Summer Internship Opportunities at the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

The 2013 QEM/NSF Science Student Internship Program will take place May 28–August 2, 2013, in the Washington, DC area, with placements at NSF headquarters in Arlington, VA. Science policy-focused internships provide undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to be mentored by program officers involved in implementing science policies and in managing/directing national science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)-focused programs. The experience is designed to increase the students’ understanding of how science policy is made as well as to further develop their potential for becoming leaders and proponents of increased participation in science and engineering by students from underrepresented minority groups. For science policy-oriented internships at NSF, an applicant must be a rising junior or senior or graduate student majoring in a STEM field at an accredited minority-serving institution or a non-minority institution with a track record in producing large numbers of STEM graduates from underrepresented groups.

During the summer, interns will have the opportunity to strengthen their research, communications, and other professional skills; and to develop a peer network that includes students from across the country who are serving as summer interns in other QEM programs. Interns also will be provided the opportunity to become knowledgeable about issues preventing minority students from receiving a quality mathematics/science
education and to become familiar with policies, programs, and strategies being implemented to address these

Why Apply?

-An opportunity to be an intern for 10 weeks in the Washington, DC area
-The opportunity to be mentored by NSF program officers involved in implementing science policy and in managing/directing national programs focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
-Roundtrip travel airfare and local transportation allowances
-Housing during the ten-week Program (for students not from the local area)
-A stipend for full-time participation
-A chance to develop a peer network that includes students from across the country who are serving as interns in other NSF programs.

Probable Exam Question?

Probable Exam Question?

Hmmm, my thoughts on a probable exam question would be something like this: Explain, down to the molecular level, how a water strider can walk on water. Would a water strider be able to walk on a solution of saltwater?
