How i prepare for exam

Hi guys, preparing for test is very stressful. Very time consuming and I have no clue on where to start. So basically, I print out every files and worksheet from PCC Canvas, from there I start by doing them one by one. Without a doubt, there are tons of stuffs that I don’t know but luckily i have a friend named Stephanie who is really good at it to help me out… Thank god. Doing works like this really bite you in the bum and taking a break is very important for me. I see taking a break as a reward system thingie for myself after studying for some time, but sometimes I take this reward for granted and forgot that i have to study, hahaha. The point is, you doesn’t have to keep stressing out yourself with your study, but you can refresh your mind with a little break and that way studying can be FUN!!!

Exam 1

Exams in general aren’t exactly the most fun things in the world. No matter how well I usually feel before an exam, the moment those papers come into my hand, it feels as if I’m staring at a different language. Of course, this is just an exaggeration of the truth, but that’s the general idea. This exam was pretty surprising for me. Although the material had all been covered, the approach for some of the topics really surprised me. For example, instead of having the problems be calculation problems, a lot ended up being explanations for the concepts. One of the things that really ended up helping me a lot in preparing for this exam was the group that I usually sit with in class. Participating in our own little discussions and trying to explain things to people who don’t really understand it as well as I did seem to have really helped me to know the material inside and out.

I guess in general, the exam was pretty reasonable and I believe that it was a good way to make sure us students really did understand the material.

First Exam Made Me Cray Cray

Studying for the first exam was exhausting! There was so much material that we had covered in class that we weren’t exactly sure what was going to be on the test. My group and I studied for HOURS trying to comprehend the vast complex concepts that Dr. Harman was unloading on us. Studying as a group really helped because we all knew different things so whatever one of us did not know, the other member would and easily explain and vice versa. What pissed me off was that we studied wavelengths and all the equations associated with waves and wave-matter that when I received the test and noticed that not a single question involved waves, a piece of my heart shattered. Overall it was okay but I was hoping more wave concepts to be asked. Its cool though, im not even mad bro lol.

Exam Strategy?

Exam Strategy?

For exam strategies, I can say, i really have none…
Try to get things done at a earlier time has long been my goal but I can never achieve it.
Every time when I tried to begin studying, something irrelevant and mindless stuff always popped up…
Basically, for this exam, I simply gone through all the notes and text once at the night before the exam.
Fortunately, I did remember most of the stuff, I guess I should give credits to my awesome lecturers as I can withdraw a lot of useful memories and knowledge from the classes.
I was pretty surprise about the craps that I wrote up on the exam, I barely have a second left. I guess I gotta be doing faster next time 😀

Exam 1

When I was preparing for the exam, I was rather motivated as it was the 1st exam of the semester and I was hoping to ace it! I studied pretty hard for both subjects. For Biology, I tried answering all the questions that was posted on canvas and memorized them. For some questions, I didn’t even really understand the content :( Therefore, during the test, it was hard for me to answer some Biology questions as I couldn’t understand it. As for Chemistry, I studied the quizzes and the notes thoroughly. However, I was surprised to see that the Chemistry questions were rather different than what was given on the quizzes. Sadly, I found it quite a challenge too. So overall, I think I did really badly. Hope to do better in the next few exams! =(

How to study efficiently?

How to study efficiently?

I actually tried to read the chemistry book to study, and less review on the notes that I took. That was a terrible idea, I simply stared at the pages without actually absorbing anything. I did not organize my study time well. What I should have done was take read in small increments while looking at my notes, and redoing corresponding problems given on that section.

I also learned to self-study before attending a study group, to take in the extensive information first then filter it for greater understanding and making larger connections.
It helps to form a study group because other members may ask questions that you would otherwise don’t know that you don’t know. Study sessions are always fun! But they need to be focused for it to be a good one because they can get very sidetracked…

Nothing in the test surprised me, everything was covered which makes me even more guilty because the bad grades that I receive will be fully on me, and my lack of focused studying. The questions asked on the test were the same but disguised in a different costume, so i had to be very familiar with it to complete the question. For the next test I have to be smarter about studying, about learning important materials and predict the types of questions that will be asked. Looking at everyday things through chemistry/ biology can be helpful too, it might lead to more questions but it reminds you of what you already learned. Although it was not a great first exam, it is good to make mistakes early on, then you know what you have to do, and ace all the rest of your exams 😀

INSET

The Internships in Nanosystems Science, Engineering and Technology (INSET) program is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored, 8-week intensive summer research internship program that engages community college students in real, cutting edge research projects at UC Santa Barbara. The students chosen for the program are matched individually with UCSB faculty and graduate student lab mentors, and gain first-hand experience in scientific investigation in a dynamic, collaborative research environment. Interns also attend weekly meetings, special seminars, and have the opportunity to develop their presentation skills throughout the summer.

This year, INSET will run from June 24 to August 16, 2013 and will admit 15 students for its science/engineering track and 3 for its social science track. More information can be found at this website, which includes an archive of all past students’ projects: Program page: http://csep.cnsi.ucsb.edu/cc/inset

INSET interns are paid $3,500 and receive either campus lodging or a $900 housing stipend. The Application Deadline is at 5pm on Friday, March 1, 2013. It would be wonderful if you could forward this information to students in your MESA program. Attached is the program flyer. In closing, just a note on the letters of recommendation, which can be submitted only through this link: Letter of recommendation page: https://csep.cnsi.ucsb.edu/forms/ug/INSET/Form.php

We recommend the students to please provide the link to the letter of recommendation page to the recommender right away. If the recommender requires additional time to complete the letter, please have them make arrangements with the program coordinator ([email protected]).

Test1

I was pretty nervous for the first test, Since different teachers have different ways of preparing their test, you don’t know if it’s going to be exactly like a study guide or completely different.

To prepare for the first exam I mostly looked at all the study guides and made sure I knew how to explain the stuff presented on the study guide for chemistry. For Biology i reviewed the stuff like Hadley cells and cell organelles and their functions. Then my group and I, we reviewed mostly the study guide and a few things on biology.

Reviewing the study guide for specifics helped a little with calculations but just at a minimum. The test mostly had concepts and ideas that i wasn’t ready for. Also the group sessions helped since explaining the ideas to other peers help with self understanding of concepts.

The test did surprise me since it didn’t have anything about electron configuration and periodic trends since we discussed them so heavily in class and a big portion of the study guide was dedicated to it.

Preparing for Exam 1

The way I prepared for Exam 1 was to read over the chapters that I didn’t fully understand. I also looked over my notes. I feel like I should have spent more time studying my notes and then just using my book as a reference, instead of the other way around. I expected the exam to have more word problems, and I waisted my time solving too many of those. Instead I should of focused more on major topics that were discussed in class.

Exam 1

“How did you prepare for Exam 1? What strategies worked and which didn’t? Did anything surprise you?

I read chapter 3, 6, and 19 on the Biology Book and chapter 1, 2, 5, and 6 on Chemistry Book. Reading the book helps but I think there is a better way to study by doing practice problems instead. The Biology part surprised me because I was expecting to name the parts of the cell but instead it was critical thinking questions.

Preparations for exam 1 included studying over the weekend and meeting up
with a study group. I spent a lot of my time going over calculation
problems per the worksheets given on canvas. After finishing the exam, I
realized that I studied the wrong way. There was not that many calculation
problems, but a lot of concept explaining problems. I believe that
practicing at explaining the concepts would be a more beneficial form of
studying. Now, for future exams I plan to meet with a study group and
practice teaching/explaining the test material. Also, taking turns at
verbally quizzing one another on particular topics. This way we can test
our knowledge and give and take from each others explanations. My current
goal is to go over exam 1 and make sure I have those concepts down and
locked. This material was placed first for a reason; it’s a foundation for
the rest. I plan to meet with a study group this week and go over it bit by
bit, until I am confident in it. This will also prepare me for exam 2. I
will be ready to tackle it with practice, practice, practice.
