Paid Science Research Opportunity for Community College Students
Now Recruiting!

Apply now to become an NSF Research Fellow at the Oak Crest Institute of Science! This internship opportunity provides community college students with the unique opportunity to perform high-impact, independent research in atmospheric chemistry. Interns learn valuable research skills and techniques, such as how to run and analyze photochemical reactions.
Eligibility:

– currently enrolled at a local community college
– legally able to work in the US
– currently enrolled in/completed general chemistry (organic chemistry a plus)
Time Commitment: 20 hrs/wk for 20 wks
Pay: $12/hr

The Achievement Award Program

Each year, highly qualified and community-minded students with a proven track record of academic success, gain admission to Berkeley but cannot afford to attend. The Achievement Award Program (TAAP) offers these students substantial scholarship funding and support services to provide the opportunity of a Berkeley education.

The Achievement Award Program is a four-year scholarship program for incoming freshman students and a two-year scholarship program for incoming junior transfer students. Only incoming Cal students are eligible to apply for this scholarship program. The scholarship is renewable, provided recipients meet the following program requirements:

Program Requirements

  1. Full-time enrollment at UC Berkeley
  2. Evening scholar meetings and events throughout the academic year (e.g. attendance at overnight Fall Retreat)
  3. 10 hours of community service and outreach per semester
  4. 2.0 cumulative GPA
  5. “Satisfactory Academic Progress” as defined by the Office of Financial Aid and the scholar’s college

The Watson Lecture Series, featuring prominent Caltech researchers, is named for the Late Earnest C. Watson, who founded the series in 1922. He presented one of his most popular lectures, “Liquid Air,” as one of the first programs at the new Beckman Auditorium, a gift of Arnold O. and Mabel Beckman, in October 1964.

Apply now for a two-week paid Winter Research Program at the NSF Center for Biophotonics Science & Technology and the College of Biological Sciences, UC Davis. This program is only open to community college students and it is sponsored by HHMI and NSF. The overall objective of the program is to provide community colleges students with a first hands-on research experience. Students from underserved and/or disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

WHO CAN APPLY: Northern CA community college students intending to transfer to UC Davis in the Fall 2012. Majors: Biochemical or Biomedical Engineering; Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related.
DATES of the PROGRAM: January 7-11, 14-18 2012

  • 23 students from 12 Community Colleges in Northern CA
  • 16 belonged to MESA
  • 11 participated in the 2012 Summer Internship (8-12 weeks). 3 received Best Presentation Awards
  • 14 transferred to the UC System in Fall 2011 (11 transferred to UC Davis)
  • 8 received travel awards to attend SACNAS and we are sponsoring their registration fee
  • 6 continue to participate in research during the academic year 2011-2012, sponsored by HHMI
